Having good game 'sense" is hard to explain, but tremendously important mostly as zerg to feel when and where you will be attacked. I hesitate to throw down spores because it is a possibility of them being totally useless for the whole game. Usually if you've been forced to throw them down, it's a desperation move and you're probably far behind.

So rather than going for an overseer you can get by with the more versatile infestor. Of course this requires much better micro but can be quite effective. You should have been able to scout what tech route they are going before the banshees attack.
If he is attack with a few banshees, an extra queen can easily scare them off. If he has cloak, it takes 15 seconds to morph an overseer. If you spot a banshee, morph it earlier than his attack of course. Spore crawlers are always a good way to prevent cloaked banshees and provide some AA. Queens are more mobile though to help protect your entire base.
Your post is basically saying that he can counter anything that you do. In theory, this is absolutely true. The game is designed to be balanced so that you CAN counter everything one way or another. Your problem is a classic example of lack of scouting. In the very beginning of a match, your opponent can do everything. Scouting will pare the options down so you only have to deal with a much more manageable set of options. You scout 5 rax. You know that he's going for a more infantry based army so you shouldn't have to worry about banshees, battlecruisers, vikings, etc.
He's telling you he wants to make a more bio based army. Expect some medivacs and drops depending on the time though. Day9 references this problem several times in his dailies. You're definitely not alone. You lose to one thing, so you try to prevent it in all games. The problem becomes that you're trying to prevent everything and end up getting killed by so much.
