Routes with an "X" prefix are express routes. Some stops serve more than one bus. Look at the Guide-A-Ride to make sure the bus you want will be stopping there. Buses display their route number on the front, and sometimes the back.
On some of our heavily used bus routes, we offer limited-stop service in both directions to make the trip faster for more customers. You'll know whether the bus that arrives is making limited stops if you see an orange "Limited" card in the bus window. Limited stops are at major intersections, transfer points, and major attractions, such as Lincoln Center. Locals make all stops.
Board the Bus When the bus with the route number you want arrives, stay on the curb until the bus stops and the front doors open. All our buses can "kneel"; that is, they can tilt down toward the curb to make boarding easier. Customers paying with coins that are in need of a transfer should enter through the front door of the bus, present their Select Bus Service receipt to the bus operator and request a transfer, which will be issued from the fare box.
You can use your transfer on the subway or on another bus. To board a Select Bus Service bus, you will need to insert your MetroCard or bus transfer at the MetroCard Fare Collector machine and obtain a proof-of-payment receipt. You may enter the bus at any door. Please be sure to hold on to your proof of payment receipt while riding the Select Bus Service. Insert your MetroCard or bus transfer into the MetroCard fare machine associated with the route you are transferring to. You will be issued a new Select Bus Service ticket as proof of payment, which you should hold on to throughout your ride.

Bee-Line Bus and Metro-North Connections UniTicket is a monthly train-to-bus, reduced-rate ticket that combines monthly round-trip local bus service with train fare.
You can check out which route you want online and print out directions. However, you can also buy a pocket-sized map at most bookstores and even convenience stores to make it easier on yourself. For instance, you can put in your departing address, landmark, or station name and the address, landmark, or station name of where you want to go. You can select just the bus or the bus plus the subway to get you there, as well as a departure time.

Because you pay your fare at the front, it's important to board the bus there. Boarding the bus near the back can lead to confusion and can make the bus driver mad. Signal to the bus driver. The bus driver will activate the ramp or position the lift so you can get on. The bus driver will also assist you in getting your wheelchair in place on the bus.
Pay for your ticket. Use your MetroCard or SingleRide ticket to pay for your fare. You can also pay for the ride in exact change. You must only use quarters, dimes, and nickles, no pennies. The front of the card should be facing you and the black strip should be on the right.
